Introduction:
The term mycorrhiza was coined by Frank in 1885 which simply means an association of fungi with the roots of higher plants.
The nature of dis association is true symbiosis mutualism. The mycorrhiza roots lack root cap and root hairs. They change their shapes and may become tuberous , nodulated or coralloid. There are two kinds of mycorrhiza – ectomycorrhiza and endomycorrhiza . Ectomycorrhiza is also called ectotrophic mycorrhiza .In this form of association , the fungal mycelium completely encloses the feeder rootlets forming sheath or mantle. The hyphae penetrate the intercellular spaces of the root cortex to form a network called the Hartig net.Ectomycorrhizae are known to occur in pinus ,oak, betula . Endomycorrhiza is also called endotrophic mycorrhiza. In this form of association, the fungus does not form an external sheath or mantle. The fungus mostally lives in in the intercellular species as well as in the cortical cells of roots. Only small portion of fungus lives outside the root. Sach type of mycorrhiza association occurs in the roots of grasses ,cereals, legumes,
rubber, tea, tobacco etc.One of the most important type of endomycorrhiza is Vesicular- arbuscular mycorrhiza (VAM). In this association, the fungal mycelium forms some special kinds of organs called vesicles and arbuscules, within the root cortical cells.Vesicles are thick walled swollen structures whereas arbuscules are dichotomously branched haustorial branches of mycelium formed either in the intercellular spaces .
