Seeds of higher plants exhibit three types of food storing tissues, they are – Perisperm, cotyledon and endosperm. Some student might be confused with term perisperm and endosperm, stored food is found in the seeds in the form of proteins, fats and carbohydrates which is utilized during embryonic development while seed germinates and in the event of seedling, endosperm gets dissolved.

The perisperm is the nutritive tissue of a seed derived from the nucellus and deposited external to the embryo sac —distinguished from endosperm. Common examples of perispermic seeds are Sugar beet, coffee, and black pepper.

Perisperm:- a thin dry layer of envelope look like reddish that surrounding the embryo and endosperm in certain seed is known as perisperm, it is nutritive food storage diploid tissues developing from remnant of nucellus after double fertilization and remain persistent, and it is found in some angiospermac plant like castor, beet, black pepper, coffee and etc.

Perisperm is the nutritive food storage diploid tissues, developing from remnant of nucellus of the ovule after double fertilization that surrounding the embryo and endosperm in certain seeds of angiospermic plants and provide nourishment to the developing embryo.

Perisperm is remnant or persistent of nucellus, nutritive diploid tissues, formed when nucellus is not completely used up and it is present in certain angiospermic seed as thin dry layer that surrounding the embryo and endosperm in seed.

Perisperm is found in certain family of angiospermic plants like- piperaceae, scitaminaceae, caryophyllaceae, amaranthaceae, portulaceae, zingiberaceae and etc, common examples of perispermic plants or seeds are castor, sugar beet, black pepper, coffee and etc.

Perispermic seed:– perispermic seed is define as those certain angiospermic seed which have a thin dry layer of remnant of nucellus of ovule which is not completely used up during the double fertilization and remain in seed as persistent of nucellus that surroundin the endosperm and embryo and provide nutritive food to developing embryo.

Examples of perisperm seed:- castor, sugar beet, black pepper and coffee are some examples of perispermic seed or plant.

Where does perisperm locate? Perisperm or remnant of nucellus generally located external to seed embryo and endosperm at micropylar end of the ovule as a thin layer that appears to be reddish, dry and pepper like compositions.

Perisperm is haploid or diploid, perisperm is remnant of nucellus developed after double fertilization inside the certain seed, as chromosomal properties of nucellus is diploid in nature, so perisperm is diploid in nature and not be haploid, it provide nutritive food to developing embryo in certain seed.

Functions of perisperm:- perisperm is diploid tissues or residual of nucellus, generally store reserve food material as carbohydrates and protein used for developing embryo in certain angiospermic seed.

What is functions of endosperm?

Endosperm is nutritive food storage triploid tissues, that surrounding the embryo in flooring plant seed, it provide nutrition to the developing zygote to embryo in the form of carbohydrate starch, this is a major function of endosperm, although in some endospermic seed, also provide nutrition during the seed germination, endosperm are also edible in coconut water.

They are both nutritive layers in a seed. Perisperm develops from remnant of nucellus of the seed and the endosperm develops when the sperm cell fuses with two haploid polar nuclei (contained in the central cell) in the centre of the embryo sac (or ovule), resulting cell is triploid (3n) and triploid cell divides through mitosis and forms the endosperm, a nutrient-rich tissue, inside the seed.

2) usually it is dry thin layer look like reddish, external to endosperm in angiosperm seed and provide nutrition for developing embryo.

3) It is found only in some families such as Caryophyllaceae, Amaranthaceae, Portulacaceae, Zingiberaceae and etc, wherein the existing embryo sac in these families turns densely packed food material within the seed, endosperm of the seed absorbs nutrients from perisperm transforms it into the embryo.

Important features and characteristics of endosperm

◆ Endosperm:-

1) The most prominent food storing seed tissue, it is formed from the primary endosperm nucleus

2) Triple fusion generates endosperm nucleus within the embryo sac, during this fusion, two haploid female nuclei and one haploid male nuclei unite to produce the triploid nucleus that is triploid primary endosperm nucleus.

3) Endosperm is formed due to the repeated cell division by the mitosis hence capable of food storage for embryonic development, usually it is considered to be a polypoid.

Difference between Perisperm and Endosperm

Perisperm differs from endosperm in being a diploid tissue, resulting from the remnant of nucellus, dry thin layer, present external to endosperm and provide nutrition for developing embryo whereas endosperm is a triploid tissue, produced inside the seeds of most flowering plants around the time of fertilization, surrounds the embryo and provides nutrition in the form of starch, though it can also contain oils and protein.
