The end of reproductive phase can be considered as one of the parameters of senescence for old age. Ageing is the sum total of change in total plant or its constituent while senescence represent the degenerative and Irreversible changes in organism. In annual and biennial plants vegetative, reproductive in senescent phase can be easily identified.
differences between senescence and ageing are given in following table
★ Senescence:-
1) it refers to all collective, progressive and deterioirative process which ultimately leads to complete loss of organisation and function
2) it includes only degenerative and deteriorative changes in plant and animals or its parts
3) Senescence occurs as a result of ageing and leads to death.
★ Ageing:-
1) it includes all the chemical and structural changes which occurs during the life span of a plant and animal or its organ
2) it is sum total of metabolic changes that occurs in plant and animal or its parts
3) ageing is a permanent feature of all living organisms.
